Launched in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to purchase john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domains remained working.
